This past Friday, I was down in Monument Square, in downtown Portland, representing EHSC at Urban Earth Day an outdoor festival organized by MENSK.
The beautiful weather and dozens of participating organizations drew hundreds of people who enjoyed good music, great food and a variety of fun activities.
At the EHSC table we provided passers-by with information on toxic chemicals in household products, and empowered Maine citizens by circulating a petition to members of the Legislature’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee asking them to save Maine’s Kid-Safe Products Act from an attack by out of state chemical companies.
We also showed off hand bags and a necktie made from environmentally friendly bioplastic. Using a technique pioneered at the University of Maine at Orono, these products, and others like them, could use Maine potatoes to create safe, non-toxic and biodegradable plastics.
I hope everyone enjoyed their Earth Day as much as I did. Keep an eye on our Calendar to find out about events like Urban Earth Day that you can be a part of.
